This is a review of some of the best free credit cards that are on offer at the moment.
A lot of these cards are perfect for beginners who are interested in getting into using credit cards to take advantage of earning points or receiving cash-back offers just by using the cards.
1.Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express
Initial Offer: $100 Cash-Back
So the first card on the list is the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express.
And this card offers $100 cashback in statement credit once you spend $1,000 in the first six months of having the card.
Along with this bonus, you will also receive 20% back for purchases made from Amazon.com up to a maximum of $200 as long as it is within the first 6 months of opening the account.
So with just these two offers, you will receive $140 in cash back after spending just $1,200 in the first 6 months which is pretty good, Just note that the cashback is in statement credits, so you don’t receive actually money.
Next up the card offers a reasonable 3% cashback on purchases made at US supermarkets up to a total of $6,000 per calendar year which is equal to $180.
And then after you reach the $6,000 maximum spend it will reset to just 1% cash back at supermarkets.
Then you will receive 2% cash back at US gas stations and certain department stores and this is not limited to how much you can spend so you do have to chance to accrue quite a lot of points.
Anything other purchases you make with the card will receive 1% cashback.
A great benefit that comes with this card is the car rental loss and damage insurance.
So to take advantage of this all you have to do is use the card to pay for your rental car and then you can decline the rental agency’s collision waiver which usually costs a fair amount of money.
And provided the car you hire meets the requirements of the credit card you will be covered for any damage or theft that may potentially happen.
2. Chase Freedom Unlimited
Initial Offer: 20,000 points worth $200
The next card on this list is the Chase Freedom Unlimited and this card is one of the best credit cards in this review.
First of all, it has a great sign-up bonus of 20,000 points which can be redeemed for $200 in cash after you spend just $500 in the first 3 months of owning the card.
Along with the $200 bonus you also get 5% cashback on pre-selected grocery stores up to a total of $12,000 in the first year.
This is twice the spend amount that Amex allows and also 2% more cashback.
So assuming you spend $12,000 over the course of the year on groceries that come in at $600 In cashback!
That’s more than 3 times the available benefits the Amex card offers.
Along with this, you will also receive 5% cashback on travel that is booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
Also using Lyft rides you will receive 5% cashback.
Then you will earn 3% from restaurants and eligible delivery services as well as drugstores.
Everything else will earn you 1.5% cashback.
Some other benefits that come with the card are a free 3-month DashPass which basically give you free deliveries on any orders that are over $12 from DoorDash
And after the 3 months are up you can continue using DashPass for another 9 months at a 50% discount.
Another great perk of this card is the purchase protection which basically gives you 120 days coverage, and this covers theft or damage, with a maximum of $500 per claim up to a total of $50,000 per account.
Also just by using the card you can receive an extended warranty of an extra year on eligible US manufacturers warranties that happen to be 3 years or less.
This is a nice option to have just to give you peace of mind.
There is also an ‘auto rental collision damage waiver’ that can help save you money if you are hiring a rental car.
Basically, you can decline the rental companies collision insurance and pay for the rental with your card.
This will cover most cars in the US or abroad for theft and collision damage.
Just be aware that this card does charge a foreign transaction fee of 3% so it’s not the best card to use if you tend to travel a lot.
3. Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card
Initial Offer: $200 Cash-Bonus
The third credit card on this list is the SavorOne cash rewards card from Capital One.
Now this card offers new card members a one-time $200 cash bonus after you spend $500 within the first 3 months of opening the account.
This just happens to be the same signup bonus as the Chase Freedom Ultimate card.
As for earning rewards with the card you will receive 3% cash back on dining and entertainment and 2 % cash back at certain grocery stores – Just note that you can’t use it at Walmart or Target to receive the 2% cashback
And basically everything else you will receive 1% cashback.
This card also has the benefit of $0 Fraud Liability which means that if someone steals your card or you lose it you will not be responsible for any unauthorized charges that are made to the card.
Another great feature this card has is no foreign transaction fees, which makes it the perfect card to use if you do happen to travel overseas a fair bit as it will save you quite a lot of money.
A useful feature this card has is authorized user, which means you can add someone to your card and actually track the spending of the user! To make sure they don’t use the card improperly.
And similar to some other more expensive credit cards you can also get an extended warranty on eligible items if they are purchased with the card.
4. Citi Double Cash Card
Initial Offer: 2% Cash-Back on all purchases
So the next card on this list is the Citi Double Cash Card.
Now this card is a little different than all the other cards on this list as it actually doesn’t have any sign-on bonus.
Instead, it offers the ability to earn 2% cashback on pretty much all purchases (basically you will earn 1% cashback on each purchase and then you will receive 1% cashback when you pay your bill) and this can help points add up quite quickly.
You also have the choice of either just using the rewards as cash back or you can convert the cashback to ThankYou points (on a linked thankyou account).
So this will convert $1 of cash rewards to 100 Citi ThankYou points and these points can then be used on a whole range of different benefits that are associated with Citi Thankyou points or you can actually transfer the points to airline partners and redeem them for flights.
Just be aware that this card is not recommended for international use if you do happen to travel a lot as it carries a 3% foreign transaction fee which can add up quite quickly.
5. Wells Fargo Propel
Initial Offer: 20,000 points worth $200
The last card on this list is the Wells Fargo Propel American Express Card.
As with all of the cards on this list it has no annual fee.
Now the sign-up bonus with this card is 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months of opening the account which is valued at $200.
Now for earning points you can expect to receive 3x points when you eat out or eat in and you will also receive 3x points at gas stations, flights, hotels, and car rentals.
All other purchases will receive 1x point per dollar spent.
And these points are not limited so you can potentially earn a lot of points if you do happen to spend a lot of money.
And best of all the points will never expire as long as you keep your account open.
So with these points, you can redeem them for travel, cash redemption from Wells Fargo ATMs or Wells Fargo Accounts, or even gift cards with some gift cards offering $25 for 2500 points.
Similar to some of the other cards on this list you are also covered by zero liability which means you will not be held responsible for any unauthorized transactions assuming you report them immediately.
Also if you pay for your cell phone bill on your card you will receive cell phone protection up to the value of $600 which will cover damage or theft (but not lost phones) and this has a $25 deductible on any claims made.
A couple of other benefits are – lost luggage reimbursement, car rental loss, and damage insurance, roadside assistance, and 24/7 travel emergency assistance.
And the last benefit is that the card holds no currency conversion fees.
