In this article, I just wanted to talk about the rumored changes to both the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and Reserve card which are rumored to go into effect on August 15, 2021
So let’s start with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.
At the moment the Sapphire preferred card already has a great sign-up bonus of 100,000 points after you spend over $4000 within the first 3 months of opening the account.
And this is substantially more than the 60,000 points that the Reserve car is offering at the moment
It also currently lets you earn 2x points on both dining and travel.
So the rumored changes to the card will apparently make it possible to earn 5x points on travel that is booked through Chase’s ultimate rewards portal.
It is also said that dining will offer 3x points (so this would be up from the current 2x points it offers now – and would bring it up to the same point earnings as the Reserve Card).
Streaming is also apparently going to offer 3x points per dollar spent., which would be good, but won’t make a huge difference as streaming costs don’t usually cost that much on an annual basis.
Finally, online grocery shopping may earn 3x points per dollar spent, although it is rumored that it will not include stores such as Target, Walmart & wholesale clubs.
And apparently, it will maintain its current offer of 2x points on all other travel purchases, and then 1 x points on all other purchases
So just these changes alone would make quite a big difference in the potential to earn a lot more points than you can at the moment with this card.
But there are a few more benefits that are rumored to be added.
It is also said that you will receive a $50 hotel credit each year that must be used through Chase’s ultimate rewards portal.
Then that last rumored update is the 10% anniversary points bonus.
And how it works is as follows – It is expected that you will earn bonus points equal to 10% of your total spend rate at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent.
So if you spend $15,000 over the course of the year, you would receive a bonus of 1,500 points.
And to me, this sounds like a really nice extra benefit to have.
Upcoming Changes
Now let’s have a quick look at what might change with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.
So currently the Chase Sapphire Reserve card has a sign-up bonus of 60,000 points when you spend $4,000 within the first 3 months of opening the account.
And surprisingly this is 40,000 fewer points than what the cheaper Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is offering at the moment.
It also offers 3x points at both dining and travel worldwide, and along with this it comes with quite a lot of other perks and benefits that are covered in some of my previous videos which you can see here
But let’s look at what the rumored changes might be for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.
To begin with, it is said that you will earn 10x points per dollar spent if you book through the Chase portal, and at the moment it is not clear what restaurant or food services will be included in this, but it could be a really great way to earn a lot of extra points if they do have a good variety of options.
It is also reported that you will earn 10x points at hotels, car rentals, and airline travel that are booked through the Chase portal.
And apparently, it will continue its current offer of 3x points on all other dining and travel, and then 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
As for the annual fee for each card, there has not been any information released about if there will be a price increase or not.
But generally speaking, these changes look like they will offer some pretty good value, especially with the Sapphire Preferred card.
The fact that they may increase the points from 2x to 3x points on dining and that they may offer the 10% anniversary bonus make it a very attractive card.
