Chase Sapphire Preferred & Reserve Credit Cards

We may earn a commission for purchases using our links, at no cost to you.

So in this article, I am going to talk about the new updates to both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve credit cards.
Both cards have added new perks and benefits that have made them both even better than they already are,  and these changes will take effect on August 16th.

Annual Fee

So when it comes to the annual fee, both of these cards are priced quite differently.
The Preferred card has an annual fee of $95, and the Reserve Card has an annual fee of $550.

Now obviously each card has different benefits which is why there is a large difference in the annual fee, so now let’s have a look at the sign-up bonus that you get with each card.

Sign Up Bonus

So starting with The Chase Sapphire Preferred card, it is currently offering a sign-up bonus of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards Points after you spend $4,000 within the first 3 months of opening the account.

This is the largest welcome bonus this card has ever offered, and with points being valued at 1.25 cents per point, these points are worth up to $1,250 when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards

Now it is possible to receive up to 2 cents per point through some partners which would make these points worth up to $2,000 if transferred to the right travel partner.

Now with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you currently get 60,000 Ultimate Rewards Points after you spend $4,000 within the first 3 months of opening the account.

This is substantially less points than what the Preferred card offers, but with the Reserve card the points are worth 1.5 cents per point, so these points are worth $900 when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

And as with the Sapphire Preferred card, you can also get up to 2 cents per point when you transfer the points to the right travel partner, so that’s upwards of $1,200 in potential value just from the sign-up bonus.

Earning Points

Now when it comes to earning points, this is where things have changed quite a bit with both cards.

So starting with the Sapphire Preferred card let’s go over all of the new points earning categories that have been added to the card.

First up you will now earn 5x points on all travel that is purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Next up you will now earn 3x points on dining which includes delivery services and take out, and this is up from 2 x points previously.

You will now receive 3x points on select streaming services.

Next, you will earn 3x points for online grocery purchases, which was previously 2x points, and this excludes stores such as Target, Walmart, and Wholesale Clubs.

And finally as before you will still receive 2x points on travel and all other purchases will relieve 1 point per dollar spent.

So this is a huge upgrade in terms of points earnings potential and will make it possible to earn a whole lot more points than ever before.

Now let’s have a look at what has been added to the Reserve card.

So to begin with you will now earn 10x points on Chase Dining purchases that are made through Ultimate Rewards.

You will also now receive 10x points for Hotel stays and car rental that are purchased through Ultimate Rewards.

And you will receive 5x points for air travel that is booked through Ultimate Rewards.

And as before you will still receive 10x points for Lyft rides through March 2022.

3x points on travel that includes flights, cruises, trains hotels, and car rentals.
3x points on Dining, and all other purchases will receive 1 point per dollar spent.

So similar to the Preferred card, the Reserve card has added a lot of points earning potential to the card which will make it a lot easier to earn points.

Benefits and User Perks

Starting with the Preferred card, there is now a new card membership anniversary bonus which will reward you with a bonus of 10% of your total annual spend each year.

There is also a new annual hotel credit of $50 that can be used towards hotels that are booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

And next, let’s look at the Reserve Card.

Reserve cardholders will now have access to new airport lounges by Chase which will be called ‘Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club’.

And these lounges will have access to food, drink, entertainment, and wellness experiences.

Initially, there will be 3 lounges located at Terminal B at La Guarda Airport NY, Terminal B at Boston Logan International Airport, and Terminal 1 at Hong Kong International Airport.

These lounges will also be available to Priority Pass Select cardholders, which is something that you already get access to as a Reserve cardmember.

There is also a new benefit for the Reserve cardholders called ‘Reserved by Sapphire’ which will give you the opportunity to make reservations at popular restaurants across the country.

And there is still the $300 annual travel credit for the Reserve card, which greatly reduces the annual fee of $550 back down to $250.

Final thoughts

So in my opinion these are some really good upgrades to already excellent credit cards.
The ability to earn a lot more points is extremely valuable as there are so many ways to use the points to your benefit whether it is for cash back, travel, or spending.
